Abstract

Digital transformation has become an urgent necessity for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) amid the rapid development of information technology. However, many MSMEs in rural areas, such as Losari Kidul Village in Brebes, still face limitations in access and knowledge regarding product digitalization, particularly in the application of barcodes as product identifiers. This community service activity aims to enhance MSME actors’ understanding and skills in creating and using barcodes for their products. The implementation method adopts a participatory approach, starting from needs assessment, training material design, to hands-on practice in barcode creation using simple and accessible applications. The training was attended by 27 MSME participants from various business sectors, including snacks, herbal drinks, handicrafts, and processed agricultural products. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge and technical abilities; prior to the training, only 11% of participants were familiar with barcodes, while after the training, more than 85% were able to understand and create barcodes independently. Additionally, participants were introduced to integrating barcodes into digital sales systems and using barcode scanner applications. High enthusiasm was evident from participants’ eagerness to further innovate, such as implementing QR codes on their products. To ensure sustainability, post-training assistance was provided and a digital MSME forum was established as a platform for sharing and consultation. This activity demonstrates that locally-driven interventions supported by academia can foster digital transformation among rural MSMEs, enhance professionalism, and strengthen product competitiveness in the digital marketplace. Thus, training and implementing barcodes represent a strategic initial step in the sustainable technological empowerment of MSMEs.
